Hilton DoubleTree Bratislava

I’m currently laying low in the DoubleTree at Bratislava. It’s a bit out of town but given it’s a category 2, it provides cheap award redemptions and gives me a chance to catch up on some writing (this blog!). The hotel is otherwise modern albeit rather small and focused particularly on conferences.

Coming to Bratislava I wasn’t sure where I should stay, but felt I needed some downtime and stop roaming every moment of each day. Compared to Vienna, the cost of living here is a bit lower and so are the hotels. Starwood as usual bucks the trend, the Sheraton here still an eye watering cost to stay at. The DoubleTree is Hilton’s only property in the city and attached to a major stadium for ice hockey. It’s all rather compact, no grand entrances or lobby space but it certainly has an eye-catching design from the outside.

Of course at check-in you get the DoubleTree cookie. That’s their ‘thing’ after all.

Room

As I mentioned the cash + points cost for category two hotels is pretty good and it’s extra special here because the deluxe rooms have the same cost even though they charge a singificant amount more if paying straight cash. No need to get an upgrade here. They also have executive suites however these deluxe rooms are comparable to a junior suite in many other hotels. There’s a large entrance way with plenty of storage space; a walk-in shower and separate bath; a sofa (extra bed), dining area and study desk.

A small welcome plate was also provided, probably due to the status.

Dining

There are just the two restaurants here, the all day Toscana and Opus which provides the buffet breakfast (although it appears also to provide catering space for events). Since I’m still HH Gold for another few years, I’m provided complementary breakfast which adds significant value to the stay. It’s been a little while since I had an international hotel style breakfast buffet. It’s nothing too great but more than enough for a hotel this size.

Can’t complain about the breakfast, but nothing spectacular by comparable standards

The all-day restaurants provides mostly international dishes at reasonable prices by international hotel standards, not locally of course.

Although it feels a bit of a cop out to hide away and just be at a computer for a day or two, the award value here is making it worth it. 4000 points + ~€25 (as opposed to €100-140) with the complementary food due to the gold status makes it not bad at all. Of course if you’re wanting a recommendation to visit this city, I’d say avoid the place entirely and find something central. Trolley buses go past here but the trams go on the major roads both north and south of the property so it just misses out in that regard. Good place just not a superb location.
